Poulan Wild Thing Chainsaw chains are easy to tighten, adjust and change. If you are unfamiliar with chainsaws, chains loosen up with use. So you have to adjust the bar forward to make up for the slack. Otherwise, the chain may bind and damage the chainsaw and hurt you. When the bar will not move forward any more, and there is a lot of slack in the chain, it must be replaced to keep you safe.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crescent wrench Chainsaw chain
  1. Step 1

Loosen and remove the two bar nuts on the right side of the machine at the base of the bar using a crescent wrench.

  2. Step 2

Remove the clutch cover and slide the bar backward, giving the existing chain all of the possible slack needed to remove it.

  3. Step 3

Unpackage the new chain and unravel it. Place the guide teeth into the channel on the bar and the clutch drum.

  4. Step 4

Replace the clutch cover and start threading the bar nuts back onto the bar bolts, but do not tighten yet.

  5. Step 5

Slide the bar forward and up to remove any extra slack in the chain. Hold this position with one hand and tighten the bar nuts with the other hand. Grasp the chain and pull forward to ensure that the chain moves freely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Top the bar and chain oil and the fuel when you change the chain.
