How to Dilute Oil-Based Enamel Paint

Oil-based enamel paints are best diluted with paint thinner. Each paint manufacturer provides different thinning instructions for their products, so it is best to follow their specifications. These instructions are found on their labels. Does this Spark an idea?

      Stir the paint well with a stir stick, or have the paint shaken for you. If you stir the paint by hand, remember to scrape the bottom of the paint can to mix all of the settled parts of the paint into the rest of the mixture.

      Add no more paint thinner to the can than what is recommended by the label. Stir the thinner into the paint well.

      Test the paint consistency with a paint brush or roller to see if it is right for you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Oil-based paint and paint thinner produce strong odors that require adequate ventilation while in use. If adequate ventilation is not possible, wear a chemical respirator and breathe normally.
