Instructions

    • 1

Dry out the kava root. In warmer climates, this can be done by simply affixing the kava root to a string and keeping the string outdoors until the plant is dried.

    • 2

Grind the dried kava root into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle. If a mortar and pestle is not on hand, this can be accomplished by placing the dried kava in a food processor or by simply chopping the dried kava with a sharp knife until it becomes a fine powder.

    • 3

Steep the dried kava in a glass of water. This can be accomplished using a tea filter or by placing the dried kava and the water in a blender and blending it for 20 seconds or so. If the blender approach is used, pour the mixture through a strainer to catch the "pulp" of the kava.

    • 4

Spice or sweeten the kava with a little ginger powder or some honey. This step is optional. Some people prefer to drink the kava in only water, perhaps with a little ice. Others prefer some sweetness or other spice to accompany the drink.
