How to Protect Shared Folders

When you have a local area network, chances are that you want to share files for easy access. However, it's important to protect those folders from unscrupulous hackers. Permissions placed on folders help protect them while giving authorized access to designated users.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the permissions window. Right-click the shared folder on the network. Select "Sharing and Security."

    • 2

Select "Share this Folder." This makes it available to users on the network. In the textbox, select a name for the shared folder. This can be the same as the file folder name or an original name that users will recognize when browsing shared folders on the network.

    • 3

Click the "Permissions" button. This opens the permission window where security is set.

    • 4

Remove the "Everyone" group. Leaving everyone allows any user to access the file folder.

    • 5

Add users. Click "Add." A screen opens with all the available users and groups on the network. Choose the person or group of people you want to give access and click "OK."
