You will need to have access to your own web server. In most cases, when purchasing a website account (via GoDaddy or Network Solutions), you will receive a web server and domain name. Once you've completed this step, you should receive an e-mail from your host with details about your FTP account.

After you've received your e-mail, locate the information pertaining to your FTP account. You will need to locate your server's FTP address (ftp.yoursite.com). Note: in some cases, you will be provided with a temporary or default username/password. To ensure maximum security of your files, you will need to change these credentials.

You will be provided with several options for configuring your FTP account. Create a username and password combination to login to your server. The best method is to use the same username and password connected to your host account (the information used to log-in to your host's website).

Once you've created your username and password, you can login to your server. Make sure that you obtain an FTP client to access your server. Once you've installed the software, open it and in the provided boxes (URL, Username and Password) enter your credentials. Depending on your host, you may be able to access your server via your web browser. To do this, open up your browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari) and type your FTP address in the URL bar. Hit "Enter," and you should be prompted with a box to enter your username and password.

Once you've logged in to your server, you will need to become familiar with the file structure. In most cases, once you've logged in, you will see a series of folders already on the server. YOU MUST NOT DELETE THESE as they are files necessary for running the server. To begin uploading files to your site, you will need to locate the public_html folder. For some, if this folder is not visible, then your host has set this folder as the 'root' or home folder already. If it is not visible, you can upload files to this directory.

You have successfully set-up your server. You can now log-in and begin uploading files.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure to keep your server information in your e-mail account or as a printout. This information is extremely important and should be accessible should any problems occur. Keep your FTP information private. Direct access to your server by unauthorized users is very dangerous and can make your website or files vulnerable.
On occasion, your site may not be accessible. This is usually due to an error with your host. Before performing any maintenance, make sure to contact your host to verify any issues.
