If you have the Remote Desktop feature enabled on a PC computer but still cannot control it from a remote workstation, you may need to configure the system's Remote Desktop port. Windows' firewall may be placing a block on the Remote Desktop port, and by unblocking the port, you will be able to remotely access the computer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC running Windows XP or later
  1. Step 1

Click the "Start" menu and click the "Control Panel" icon. Double click the "Windows Firewall" control panel icon. Go to the "Exceptions" tab at the top of the firewall control panel window.

  2. Step 2

Check the box next to "Remote Desktop" to unblock the remote connections from the firewall port. Uncheck the box to block the port again.

  3. Step 3

Highlight "Remote Desktop" and click "Edit" to configure the Remote Desktop port. Click the "Change Scope" button to configure the Remote Desktop port so that only certain IP addresses or ranges are allowed to access the computer. Click "OK" to save the configuration settings.
