Knowing how to attach an external floppy disk drive to a Dell laptop will allow you to save to a floppy disk or upload from a floppy disk. The floppy disk is easy to install and easy to use. You need to know how to find the floppy drive once you connect it to the laptop so that you will be able to upload or download pictures, music or documents. Learn what you need to do to use an external floppy drive with a Dell laptop.

Things You'll Need:

  • Open USB port
  1. Step 1

    Take the USB plug on the external floppy disk drive and plug it into the available USB port on the laptop. There is no need to reboot. The laptop will see the drive as soon as you plug it in.

  2. Step 2

    Open the start menu and click on "My Computer" to see available drives. The drive should show under "Devices with Removable Storage." If not, it will be under "Scanners and Cameras." It will display the name "Floppy Disk Drive."

  3. Step 3

    Use the mouse to double click the drive. This will open up the drive and display any files on the floppy or it will be empty, waiting for you to transfer files to it.

  4. Step 4

    Use the mouse and double click the file you want to view to open it. If you want to transfer a file to the floppy, simply find the file, right click the mouse, select "Send to" and select the floppy drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • This process works on other computers as well--even the Acer Mini laptop.
