Pan bread is somewhat like pizza, without the sauce. Pan bread is a flat bread whose top is usually seasoned with spices, olive oil, cheese and herbs. Instead baking it in a loaf pans, you cook it in a baking pan. Not only simple but tasty, this bread can be served to guests during a dinner or eaten as a snack by yourself and is a delicious and welcome addition to any meal.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pack dry instant yeast ½ cup sugar 1 cup hot water Olive oil 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour Plastic wrap Baking pan Rolling pin 2 tbsp. Italian seasoning 1 cup mozzarella cheese

    How to Make Pan Bread

  1. Step 1

Add the dry yeast and sugar together in a bowl and add the hot water. Let the yeast dissolve, about 5 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Pour 1/3 cup of olive oil into the yeast mixture. Next, add 1 cup of all-purpose flour to the mixture, stirring to mix completely. Keep adding the flour, stirring after each addition, until all the flour is used.

  3. Step 3

Sprinkle flour on a hard surface and set the bread dough on it. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes or until it's smooth and no longer sticky.

  4. Step 4

Coat the inside of a large bowl with oil and sit the dough in it. Turn the dough upside down so the oil coats both sides. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and place in a warm area for 2 hours or until doubled in size.

  5. Step 5

Oil a 9-by-11 baking pan and sprinkle a handful of corn meal on the bottom. Flatten the risen dough with either a rolling pin or your hands and place the flattened dough in the oiled baking pan.

  6. Step 6

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Pour ¼ cup of olive oil in a bowl along with the Italian seasoning and stir. Spread the seasoned oil on to the top of the dough, making sure to cover the entire surface. Next, use your fingers to make dents in the surface of the dough.

  7. Step 7

Bake in the oven for 15 minutes and remove from the oven. Add the mozzarella cheese to the top of the bread and place back in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes more, or until the cheese is completely melted. Let cool before eating.

Tips & Warnings
  • Onions, olives or herbs can be left on top of the dough before cooking for more flavor.
