Making your own buttons can be a great way to show your support to a cause or to make a cover button to decorate your favorite pillow. While these two types of buttons seem totally different, they are actually surprisingly similar in style and both fairly easy to construct.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a piece of round metal at your local craft store or simply use cardboard to cut a circle into your desired size.

    • 2

Pick out a piece of fabric or draw or print a slogan or picture onto a piece of fabric or piece of paper. Make sure the picture coordinates with the size of the cardboard so that it will not be lost when placed on top of it.

    • 3

Wrap the fabric or piece of paper onto the cardboard or metal piece, making sure your picture (if there is one) is face up. Make sure your picture has about 1/4-inch "fold-over allowance" (the blank space around the circle of your picture) so that the fabric or paper can be wrapped around the button without losing the picture.

    • 4

Gather the material in the back and trim. You can glue the fabric onto the button, or you can simply gather the excess material in the back and use it to attach the button to your decorative object (by sewing the material onto a pillow, for example). Sew your button onto a pillow or another item for decoration, if making a cover button.

    • 5

Cover the picture or material with pliable plastic if you wish to wear your button. Glue it firmly in the back with superglue, making sure there are no air gaps in the front. Alternately, you can choose to use contact paper or clear plastic wrap, which may be easier to work with. Since they are both sticky, you will not need glue.

    • 6

Glue a ready-made button pin or safety pin on the back of your button and wear proudly.

    • 7

Purchase a toolbox or jewelry box. Paint it and decorate it with glitter and other embellishments. Store your supplies there so that you will always be prepared to make a new button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also purchase cover button templates at any sewing store. To make your own ready-made kit, purchase several pins, cut out round pieces of cardboard or purchase ready-made round pieces of metal. Put them in a tool box to use when you're feeling inspired.
