How to Rearrange Letters to Make Words

Many types of word games and puzzles require you to rearrange letters to form words or phrases. Sometimes you start with a jumbled group of letters. Other times you may have words or phrases that you need to rearrange to make different words or phrases. When you make one word or phrase from another, that's called an anagram.

Instructions

    • 1

Stare at the letters. A solution may just "pop out" at you. You can help this process along by looking at the letters in different ways. Try writing the letters in reverse order, writing them in a circle, rearranging them at random, or separating them into two columns, one with vowels and the other with consonants.

Approach the problem systematically. Look for common prefixes and suffixes such as "re," "un," "ing" and "tion." Look for combinations of letters that are often found together. If you still haven't found the answer, test out each letter, in turn, to see if it could be the start of the word you are looking for. Test each remaining letter to see if it could be the second letter, and so on.

Try using Scrabble tiles. If you can't find the solution using paper and pencil, using tiles may help you see things in a different way and may cause the answer to "pop out." Use small squares of paper if you don't have tiles handy.

Put the puzzle aside and come back to it later. Looking at it with fresh eyes can be surprisingly effective in causing the solution to "pop."

Tips & Warnings
