How to Defrag a Windows Based Operating System computer

The following instructions provide step by step, easy way of preforming a defragmentation on your computer to gain better performance out of your system. be sure to close all programs before starting your Defragmenter.

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Operating System on your computer.
  1. Step 1
    Location of the start button.

    Close all programs and go to your desktop. Go to and click on the "start" button in the bottom left hand corner of your desktop as shown in the provided image.

  2. Step 2

    Click on "All programs" then a new window will pop up.In this new pop up go to and click on "Accessories" then a new window will pop up.

  3. Step 3

    In this window, go to, and click on "System tools" then a new window will pop up, in this window you will see "Disk Defragmenter".

    Click on "Disk Defragmenter" and the window will pop up as shown in the image. Click the defragment button and it should start defraging. This process can take a while, and will let you know when it has completed the task.

Tips & Warnings
  • During defragment, do not open any other programs until the process is over.
  • Make sure there are no other programs are running on your computer while defraging. This can interrupt the defraging process.
