Determine if the insurer pays a percentage of the bill or a fixed rate and find out what care is covered. Most policies are available in several different levels of care at different prices. Learn if specialized care is covered in a pet health insurance policy. To cover such things as cancer treatments, a higher-priced policy will probably be needed.

Ask about policy deductibles. Just as human policies have deductibles, pet health insurance does as well. Different companies offer different deductible amounts so this is something to be sure to check. For pet parents with more than one animal to insure, there may be a discount available.

Determine if pre-existing conditions and congenital problems in the pet are covered as many pet health insurance policies do not cover such things.

Ask if there are any age requirements. While some pet health insurance companies won't cover older dogs, if the dog is initially covered at a young age, his policy won't be canceled when he reaches a certain age. There may be surcharges, however, that will make his coverage more expensive.
