Step 1
4th of July - Pay Respect to Those Who Died for Independence
Before your July 4th picnic or get-together take an hour or two to visit a cemetery. Ask the cemetery custodians to show you where veterans are laid to rest. This is a respectful gesture for those who fought and gave their lives for our independence. -
Step 2
4th of July - Remember the Active Military Still Fighting to Keep Us Free
• 'Operation Goody Bag' ships brown lunch bags, hand colored in patriotic themes filled with candy, gum, a personal letter, original poetry and puzzles to America's First Responders. Just a little brown bag brings a little bit of home to those that serve. For information on how to help put a smile on the face of active military overseas see the link in the resource section below.
• 'Operation Gratitude' is the non-profit, volunteer organization that sends care packages to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas. Purchase a t-shirt, sweatshirt, mug, dog t-shirt, or items for the office or send a cash donation to support this operation. For more information see the link in the resource section below. -
Step 3
4th of July - Teach Your Kids about Independence Day
There are many activities you can do with your kids to teach them about how this country fought for its independence, and continues to do so.
• The library has many books about the heroes who fought for our country. Let the kids check out a few, at their reading level, and read them together.
• There are websites that provide a wide array of 4th of July crafts, entertainment, and Independence Day learning possibilities. Go to 'FamilyFun.go.com' or 'apples4theteacher.com' and spend time coloring, doing word searches, and putting together puzzles while learning.
• The U.S. Department of Defense Community Relations provides a link for you and your kids to send a message of 'thanks' to troops overseas. Click o the link in the resource section below, then scroll down to find 'Thank the Troops' link on the right side of the webpage.
