Black hair can tend to get dry unless great care is taken. Dry hair is brittle and highly susceptible to breakage. If your hair is over-processed from too many relaxers, or if you wash it too frequently, you run the risk of having dry hair. Follow these steps to learn how to correct dry black hair.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    DO NOT OVER-SHAMPOO BLACK HAIR

The first step you need to take to correct dry hair is to pay close attention to your shampoo regimen. Nothing will make black hair dryer than daily washing. Try washing your hair three times a week or co-washing it so as not to have dry hair. If you are not sure of how to co-wash your hair, you can read the appropriate article in the link posted below this article.

  2. Step 2

    MOISTURIZE & RECONSTRUCT

Because of the harsh chemicals we use in our hair (Sodium Hydroxide Lye, Ammonium Thioglycolate, etc.) black hair needs a great deal of moisture. These chemicals completely dry out the hair and scalp, so great care is needed to put moisture back in. Make sure that you go out and find the moisturireizing conditioner that works best for you. Unfortunately, the only way to do this is by trial and error.

If you have extremely dry hair you may need to initially use an intense reconstructing treatment pack, then switch to a lower level moisturizer for regular use.

  3. Step 3

    PROTECT YOUR HAIR BEFORE DRYING

Black hair is very delicate. After you have washed your hair, preferably co-washed it, you will need to coat your hair strands with a thermal hair protector to protect it from too much heat in the next step.

  4. Step 4

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR HAIR IS NOT OVERLY-DRIED WITH THE HAIR DRYER

Take great care not to let black hair dry completely (bone dry). Leave it partially dry, then let the rest of your hair air dry. It would definitely be better if you let your hair air dry, but there will be times when you will need to use a hair dryer. Just make sure that you do not aid the condition of dry hair by overly drying it with the hair dryer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, healthy black hair requires a lot of work, make sure that you are doing all that you can to keep it looking nice.

on 7/5/2009 Here comes the sun! Summer’s finally arrived and extra care for hair and skin is the #1 priority for better beauty health. You’ll need to protect hair and skin from drying out during these hot sultry days with plenty of hydration to keep skin supple and hair from weakening. At night, use plenty of moisturizing remedies and add a real satin pillowcase to your beauty regimen.
Careful! Not all satin is created equal. Polyester brands tend to fuel perspiration and the sateen imitators are simply cotton cases with a glossy finish. We found the Satin Hydration Therapy® beauty pillowcase from Neero & Ana (www.neero-ana.com) to be the best of the bunch.
A lush blend of plant based botanical bridal satin, this premium plant based glossy nighttime beauty helper allows hair to float across the pillowcase, resists hair breakage and immediately improves the condition of skin and hair. We’ve ...
