1. Get rid of your clutter. Before you begin to decorate in contemporary style, remove all the clutter. Put away your collectibles and small objects. Remove unnecessary furniture.

2. Decide on color. Contemporary style is neutral colors such as white, black, cream, and tan. It is accented with bright colors such as red, yellow, or even purple.

3. Arrange the furniture. You want the furniture to be arranged so there is easy traffic flow. In the living room, consider removing the coffee table and just using the end tables. In the bedroom, consider removing some bureaus and building storage space in the closets.

4. Add interesting pieces. On the walls, hang one large painting or art object. You may leave a wall bare. In the bedroom, add a silk or fur bedspread. In the dining room, look for an area rug and one large vase for the table.

5. Add track lighting. Lighting should be functional and create mood. Track lighting works well because you can direct the lights on a focal point in the room. Put the lights on dimmer switches. Lamps should be metal with clean lines.
