If left untreated, hypertension (a.k.a high blood pressure) can lead to serious complications such as heart attack and stroke. Thus, it's vital for everyone to maintain control of their blood pressure. According to the Mayo Clinic, everyone will experience hypertension at least once in their life. But fortunately, there are ways to relieve hypertension and reduce your risk of serious medical problems.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat a healthy diet to control your blood pressure. Choose low-fat foods such as lean meats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

  2. Step 2

Limit your salt intake. Pay attention to food labels and reduce your consumption of high-sodium, processed foods. To relieve and control hypertension, eat fewer than 1,500 milligrams of salt a day.

  3. Step 3

Reduce your body fat. Excessive weight contributes to hypertension. If you're obese or overweight, resolve to decrease and maintain a healthy weight.

  4. Step 4

Start exercising. Regular exercise improves your overall health. You'll maintain a healthy body weight, and you'll relieve hypertension. Begin a workout routine and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day.

  5. Step 5

Modify your lifestyle. Lifestyle habits such as smoking, over-consumption of alcohol and anxiety can increase your blood pressure. To relieve hypertension, strategize a plan to quit smoking, limit your intake of alcohol and find ways to control stress.
