How to Knit a Beanie Hat With a Bill

Nearly every knitter has made her share of hats. They're quick, practical and easy on-the-go projects. Adding a bill to a basic beanie hat provides sun protection and adds a bit of style to a basic hat. You can use a cotton, hemp or linen blend yarn for a summer hat or a wool or super-wash wool for a winter hat. Choose a yarn with good body for this project, and avoid overly soft or drapey yarns for a good result.

  1. How to Knit a Beanie Hat with a Bill

    • 1

Cast on 96 stitches for an adult size beanie hat. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist your work. Place a marker to note the start of the round. Knit one, purl one on round one. When you reach stitch 48, mark the stitch with waste yarn, a safety pin or a coil-less safety pin style stitch marker. On round two, purl one, knit one. Continue working in this seed stitch pattern for one inch from the cast-on edge.

    • 2

Knit 8, make one, repeating to the end of round. You will have increased 12 stitches for a total of 108 stitches on the needles. Work in stockinette stitch, knitting all stitches until you have a total of five inches of work from the cast-on edge.

    • 3

Knit 18 stitches and place marker. Repeat this pattern to the end of the round. You should have 6 markers in place now, counting the marker at the beginning of the round. Begin decreasing for the crown of the hat. Knit two together and knit to two stitches before the first marker. Slip, slip, knit and slip the marker. Knit two together. Continue in this pattern doing a slip, slip, knit decrease before the marker and a knit two together after the marker. You will end with a slip, slip knit at the end of the round. Knit the two following rounds even. Continue in this pattern until 6 stitches remain between each marker, then decrease every round until you have only 12 stitches on your needles. Knit two together around and thread your yarn through the remaining six stitches on your knit beanie.

    • 4

Use a size 5 or size 6 needle to pick up 20 stitches on either side of your safety pin or waste yarn marker. These stitches will form your beanie hat bill. Working back and forth, work one inch in stockinette stitch ending with a wrong side row.

    • 5

Use short rows to shape your knitted hat bill. Knit to the last stitch on the needle, then wrap and turn. Purl to the last stitch, then wrap and turn. Continue in this manner until five stitches on each side have been wrapped. This is the top side of your knitted hat bill.

    • 6

Knit 33 stitches, wrap and turn. Purl 34 stitches, wrap and turn. Continue knitting and purling one more stitch on each side before turning until you purl 40 stitches. Continue working in stockinette stitch, picking up wraps and knitting them with the stitches as you go until the top of the brim and bottom of the bill line up.

    • 7

Seam the edges of the brim using mattress stitch. Stitch the underside of the bill to the seed stitch edge of the beanie. You may add plastic mesh to the knit beanie bill if desired as a reinforcement. Wash and block your hat for a good fit.
