High school and college graduates are usually required to wear a cap and gown. Sometimes the cap is called a mortarboard or a hat. The top of the hat is flat and diamond shaped. Many graduates like to take this space and decorate it to reflect their own personality. It also makes it easier for family and freinds to identify you, and makes it possible for you to find your hat after all of the hats are thrown up in to the air at the end of the ceremony.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how to decorate your hat by making a list of things that interest or describe you. For example, if you are a cheerleader you would write that on your list. Then when create your hat you could add a few craft pom poms or some strands of ribbon that represent your team.

Look for items that would represent some of the things on your list. You may find these at home or at a craft store.

    • 3

Trace your hat on a piece of paper by flipping the hat upside down and running your pencil along all four sides. Try your ideas on the paper pattern--you don't want to start gluing items to your hat and then find you don't have enough room.

    • 4

If you want to add words, cut them out of a piece of construction paper and glue them on the cap. Letter stickers are available at craft stores, but consider whether they will be too small for others to read.

    • 5

Glue your design to the top of the cap. Be careful with the glue gun because it can get really hot. You don't need a lot of glue to get the item to stay in place.

    • 6

Finish off the cap by dangling items from the rim of your hat. Tie a length of thread to each item and then make one stitch through to the top of the cap to secure it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can hang candy canes or licorice sticks from your graduation cap so you have something to eat if you get hungry.

  • Don't pile things up on your graduation hat as that would cause those sitting behind you to have trouble seeing the ceremony.
