How to Make a Homemade Ice Cream Maker

Old coffee cans can be recycled into a homemade ice cream maker. Since it requires no electricity, this ice cream maker is included at many summer camps. This is a good activity for children ages six and up. They can help to add the ingredients, and they will be able to make the ice cream itself by rolling the coffee cans for several minutes. It will be best to do this activity outside in case one of the coffee cans develops a leak. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour the half and half, sugar and vanilla extract into the smaller coffee can.

    • 2

Place the plastic lid onto the small coffee can and seal it with duct tape.

    • 3

Put the small can into the larger coffee can. Layer ice and the 1/2 c. salt in the large coffee can around the small can until it comes to the top of the can.

    • 4

Put the lid on the large can and seal with duct tape.

    • 5

Roll the coffee can across the ground for 15 to 20 minutes. After rolling it for 10 minutes, open the larger coffee can to check the level of ice. Add more salt and ice if needed to keep the can full to the top with ice.

    • 6

Check the ice cream in the smaller can by unsealing the lid. The ice cream is finished when it has a thick, creamy texture. If it is still too thin, reseal the cans and roll for another 10 to 15 minutes. The longer you roll the coffee cans, the thicker your ice cream will be.

    • 7

Let the ice cream sit in the small coffee can in the ice for 10 minutes after you finish rolling it. This will help it to set properly. You can skip this step and serve immediately, if desired.

    • 8

Spoon the ice cream out of the smaller coffee can into bowls and add ice creams toppings if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are using metal coffee cans and put both of them into the freezer the night before, your ice cream will freeze faster.
