Things You'll Need:
- Building blocks (or blocks of the same size)
-
Step 1
Learn how to say the fractions. Place four blocks of the same size together. Since you have four blocks of the same size, you have 4/4s. The fraction is the sum of the entire object. The bottom number represents the number of blocks you start with, which is called the denominator. The top number represents the number of blocks you have remaining, which is called the numerator.
-
Step 2
Take one block away. You still have four blocks, but now only three are in the group. You have 3/4s and 1/4 was taken away.
-
Step 3
Place eight blocks together. You now have a denominator number of eight. Since all blocks are presented, you have 8/8s.
-
Step 4
Take three blocks away. You still have eight blocks, but three were taken away, so you have five left. The five represents the top number, so your fraction would be 5/8s and you took away 3/8s.
-
Step 5
Use visual effects to teach beginning fractions. You can use blocks, eggs or anything that can make a fraction by taking away a part. For instance, if you have 12 eggs in a carton and you take away seven, you have 5/12s left and took away 7/12s.
