How to Join Fishing Lines

The best way to join fishing lines is with a double uni-knot, a basic fishing knot that consists of two converse surgeon's knots. If your line is too short, or if you break a line while fishing and need to reattach it, this simple knot will do the trick. It also is especially handy because you can tie the two sections together while they are still engaged: only one end of each line is necessary for a uni-knot.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay the two lines with ends overlapping about 8 inches.

  2. Step 2

Wrap the end of one line around the other line and back across itself, creating a loop in the end of the line that the other line passes through.

  3. Step 3

Take the same end of the same line and pass it through the loop four or five times. The knot is similar to the first part of tying your shoe, except you pass the line through several times instead of once. Pull the line tight.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the process with the other line. The end of the second line should be sticking out the first knot, still about 8 inches long and unused. Wrap it around the first line, make a loop and pass the end through several times.

  5. Step 5

Draw the second knot tight, then test the knot by pulling the lines against each other in opposite directions.
