How to Remove Startup Programs in Registry Editor

The registry is a large and vital database containing almost all of the settings for Windows and any additional applications that have been installed. The Registry Editor enables you to view and edit all of the registry entries available and contains five root directories: "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT," "HKEY_CURRENT_USER," "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," "HKEY_USERS" and "HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG." The startup programs in registry editor are contained within "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE," which stores information about hardware, software and preferences. Back up any important data before making changes to the registry (see Warnings and Resources). These steps apply to all versions of Windows after Windows 95.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "Start" and go to "Run." Type "regedit" in the box and click "OK."

    • 2

Click the "+" next to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE"; then click the "+" next to "Software," "Microsoft," "Windows," "CurrentVersion" and any folders starting with "Run," such as "Run," "RunOnce" and "RunOnceEx," as they also contain startup programs.

    • 3

Right-click on the startup program you would like to delete in the right-side pane and click "Delete."

Tips & Warnings

  • The registry should be backed up before making any changes, as making a wrong change could cause Windows to crash or become corrupt. See Resources for a Windows guide on backing up the registry.
