Step 1
Establish your characters and setting from the Sims 2. Start up your Sims 2 game and the insert your expansion pack to load all of the new add-ons and pet features.

Start by getting low-maintenance pets. Sim 2: Pets doesn't classify the two distinctions of pets you can have, but there are basically high-maintenance pets, like cats and dogs, and low-maintenance pets, like birds, fish and hamsters. Go to "Buy" mode and buy items like a bird cage or fish bowl.

Insert the new item in your house. Have your Sim go to the fish bowl and click on the "Stock" command. Money will be taken from your account and you be able to customize you new low-maintenance pet by naming it and choosing its color.

Go to the "Create a Family Screen" and click on the "Design a Pet" option. Now, you can design a cat or dog just as you designed your Sim characters.

Go to the pet store to buy and select new pets. You also have the option to build and manage your own pet shop to earn money to buy different pets.

Step 6
Adopt a pet by using your phone option to call the pet adoption agency. You'll be taken to the adoption center where you can look at different pets available for adoption. You can play with the pet to win its affection, which will help you be chosen by the agency to adopt that pet. This is an advantage over buying a pet since it's free.
