Step 1
First you need to realize that you may not be able to select the wildlife you want to attract. Decide the animals you want and deal with the ones you don’t later.
-
Step 2
Attract the birds and the bees to your garden. To attract birds and butterflies you need to provide plants where they will nest and where they can find food. Remember that you will want pollinators for your flowers, fruits and vegetables. So, attracting bees and moths should also be a goal.
-
Step 3
Beware those cute little bunnies. Rabbits, like gophers and moles can be very destructive. For all these critters you can provide physical barriers to protect your garden plants without endangering the garden wildlife you want to attract.
-
Step 4
If you do not have pets or small children, then you need not be concerned if you live in an area where predators can wander into your garden. Remember that predators are a vital part of the ecology and they need to be supported too. They will help keep down rodent pests and other unwanted wildlife.
-
Step 5
Wildlife loves waterAll animals will appreciate water. Water features will be a major way to attract wildlife to your garden. Ponds, fountains, waterfalls or any other water source will help replace the natural watering resources disappearing during droughts and from human encroachment.
-
Step 6
Plant native plants for wildlifeRemember that local wildlife has evolved as a part of your native environment so they will most appreciate plantings of wildflowers and native plants. Local plants form their homes and are natural food sources.
