Make the big picture decisions for your party. Find a location, create a guest list, and set a party date.

Purchase, fill out and send invitations. If purchasing invitations, select those with cowboys or other western-themed images, such as horses, lassos or wanted posters. If you are making the invitations, choose wording that indicates the cowboy theme, such as "Yee-haw, it's a birthday hoedown!"

Plan your menu. Make food and beverages that fit the cowboy theme, such as a horse-shaped cake, bottles of root beer, hot dogs, baked beans and corn bread.

Plan the games and activities. A horse-shaped pinata is a fun activity for a child's party. Fill the pinata with chocolate coins and other old-fashioned candy. Playing country or bluegrass music and having line dancing or square dancing are activities all ages will enjoy.

Purchase your party supplies. Get enough cups, plates, napkins, cutlery and serving dishes to accommodate your menu and the number of guests you expect to attend. Purchase cowboy-themed decorations such as tablecloths, banners and balloons with depictions of horses, cowboy hats or cowboy boots. Placing hay bales around the party space for extra seating adds to the theme. Ensure that you have enough favors and prizes for all of the games. Look for cowboy-themed prizes and favors such as sheriff's badges and gold-wrapped chocolate coins.
