Punch Shot

Playing during windy days is apart of routine play during rounds of golf. In windy conditions it is important to keep the ball down and not allow it to balloon into the air. The steps for hitting golf shots in the wind are easy. Playing a low penetrating punch into the wind is called a bump and run.

Instructions

    • 1

In windy conditions, the first step is to always grip down on the club and play the ball back in the stance. Choking down creates a compact swing setup that does not promote a big swing to launch the ball high into the air where it will become subject to being manipulated by the wind.

    • 2

To setup to hit a low punch into the wind, set your feet about shoulder width apart.

    • 3

Place the ball just off your rear foot. Placing the ball there will setup a low ball flight. The opposite is placing the ball forward which promotes a higher ball flight.

    • 4

After choking down on the club, press the club shaft forward ahead of the ball to deloft the club.

    • 5

Use moderate grip pressure and place the majority of your weight on your back foot.

    • 6

The swing should not be a full swing. Swinging too hard may produce too much speed and send the ball too high. Use a half swing.

    • 7

On the downswing, hit down on the ball on clip it off of the turf.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't lean into the shot. Following the setup procedures will keep the ball low

  • Mind your hand speed: too much hand action will result in a low hook (don't let the right hand rotate over the left to quickly)

  • A punched shot will exhibit a lot of roll after landing, hence 'bump and run'
