Step 1
Choose a mild day to learn how to skip a rock. If it is too windy, it can be harder if the rocks are light and can be carried by the wind. The water surface will be calm on a mild day too, which is what is needed to learn how to skip rocks.
-
Step 2
Select a flat or flattened rock for skipping. It should be about the size of a half dollar or slightly larger, but not huge. It needs to be on the lighter side for weight too. Too heavy will not glide through the air as we want it to before it skips on the water.
-
Step 3
Hold the rock in between the thumb and fore finger on your dominant hand. Tuck it in these two digits so you have a pretty good grasp on the rock. Support the bottom of the rock with your middle finger. You will use these three fingers to guide the rock in the air to the water.
-
Step 4
In a flipping, sudden movement of your wrist, aim the rock so it is perpendicular to the water so it skims the water several times or at least once before sinking. You have just learned how to skip a rock.
