Fibromyalgia is a medical condition that causes pain and tenderness throughout the body. Joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons are all affected as fibromyalgia strikes at the body’s connective tissues. The exact prevalence of fibromyalgia is not known, but it is generally accepted that at least two percent of the U.S. population is affected. Women are disproportionately affected and the odds of suffering from fibromyalgia increase with age. The specific cause of fibromyalgia is not currently known. However, a number of associated risk factors may provide clues. The University of Pennsylvania Health System suggests that disturbances in the sleep cycle may be associated with the development of fibromyalgia. As such, it is possible that regularly getting seven or eight consecutive hours of sleep per night may reduce the risk of fibromyalgia. Sleep disturbances are commonly found in fibromyalgia patients, and whether they amount to a symptom or a cause is inconclusive.

  1. Step 1

Treatments for fibromyalgia are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. They may vary depending on the patient’s age, medical history, and the severity of the condition. In the mildest of cases, a person may actually grow out of the condition; their symptoms may disappear after reducing stress, improving their sleep quality, or implementing another associated lifestyle change. In these cases, no actual medical treatment may be necessary.

  2. Step 2

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, dietary changes can be helpful in treating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. If a person with fibromyalgia does not maintain a balanced diet, it may contribute to the strength of the condition; keeping a balanced diet can help to regulate sleep patterns and ease fibromyalgia symptoms. Other potential dietary treatments for fibromyalgia include fish oil or vitamin supplements. Always talk to your doctor before beginning any treatment.

  3. Step 3

Avoid taking in high levels of caffeine. People with fibromyalgia who drink a lot of caffeine can disrupt the sleep cycle and aggravate their symptoms.

  4. Step 4

Physical therapy may be helpful in treating fibromyalgia muscle and joint pain. According to the UCLA Health System, getting regular aerobic exercise can help to ease the symptoms of fibromyalgia. It is generally best to start with short low-impact stints of exercise and gradually progress to normal workout sessions. High-impact exercise should be avoided as it can cause more pain than it does relief.

  5. Step 5

Over the counter anti-inflammatory or pain relief drugs like ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help to ease the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Depending on the strength of the condition, a doctor may recommend a prescription drug like Pregabalin or milnacipran to treat fibromyalgia, per the University of Maryland Medical Center.

  6. Step 6

If you suffer from fibromyalgia, experience its symptoms, or have any questions or concerns about fibromyalgia, consult your doctor. The pain from fibromyalgia can be sickening, but there are a number of treatments that can ease or altogether eliminate the symptoms.
