How to Unfreeze Rusted Lawn Mower Height Adjusters

Some times you get a very good price on a used lawn mower, for some unknown reason. There often is a reason beyond somebody is trying to be nice. Height adjustments for lawn mowers often rust freeze either because the mower is a few years old or the adjustments have not been varied for some time. (Continuous exposure to a damp environment will increase the likelihood of rust). Many times this ailment can be remedied in less than 15 minutes.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    When the wheels height adjusters are rusted, put 2 cups of vinegar into a container and add 1 cup of Marvel Mystery Oil. Shake the mixture and place a spray nozzle into the container.

  2. Step 2

    Spray all rusted areas on the lawn mower with the solution, especially all of the parts pertaining to wheel height adjustment. Allowing 5 - 15 minutes for the solution to eat into the rust will usually be long enough.

  3. Step 3

    With a little luck, now you can adjust the wheel heights. If not, get a good pair of vice grips or a large pair of channel locks. Force pry open the adjustments and move to a different height slot. Spraying more of the vinegar and Mystery oil mixture, at this time, may be needed. Then move the adjusters from minimum to maximum height a few times.

Tips & Warnings
  • After you have loosened the adjusters, readjust the adjusters perhaps once a month, just to keep them from rust freezing again.
