Strip Wax off of Hardwood Floors

I love hardwood floors in a home. They are fairly easy to clean and care for. Best of all they look beautiful. Over time, a wax build up can dull your beautiful floors. Many people don't realize it's a wax build up dulling the finish, they think it's time to strip and refinish the floors. Before going through the expense of refinishing your floors, try stripping the wax first. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep or vacuum your floor to remove any dirt.

    • 2

Keep your work are fairly small. I would suggest working in about 24 inch square sections. Pour mineral spirits over your work are. Mineral spirits can be found in any hardware or home improvement store.

    • 3

Use # 3 steel wool. Rub back and forth to make sure you are going in the same direction as your floor is laid. To make this a little less back breaking you can attach the steel wool to a mop or broom. Replace the steel wool as you see the wax build up on it.

    • 4

As you rub back and forth the wax will start to dissolve. Wipe up immediately with a soft, clean, dry rag.

    • 5

Repeat this process until your whole floor is finished.

    • 6

Any stubborn spots that still have wax, use the # 3 steel wool pad without the mineral spirits and rub lightly.

    • 7

Vacuum up and remaining bits of wax.

    • 8

When your floor is completely dry, apply a new coat of wax if necessary.
