Beehive hairstyles are called such because a beehive is what they resemble. To get this look, the hair is teased and piled high upon the head. The beehive hairstyle is making a comeback after first becoming a hit in the late 1950s. To create beehive hairstyles, you will need to have medium length hair or long hair for desired height and volume.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two hair clips A fabric covered elastic band A box of hairpins A regular comb Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Half & Half Beehive. For the half & half beehive, you might want to set your hair as you normally would for a good portion of your hair will hang down in the back. After setting your hair, make a part across the top back section of your head (from side-to-side), and then make another part from side-to-side a couple of inches away from that part and a distance away from the front of your head. Pin the front section of hair in place with the hair clip to keep it temporarily out of the way. Comb middle section of hair up, gathering it into a ponytail on top of your head, and secure it with the elastic band. Take a small section of hair from the ponytail and run a comb through it in an upward direction. When you reach the end of the hair, put the teeth of the comb through the hair, near the end of the hair, and slide the comb down the hair, towards the scalp, so the hair bunches up (this is called teasing the hair). Tease the rest of the hair in the ponytail (one small section at a time) until all the hair is teased and resembles a bird's nest. Take the clip out of the front section of hair and comb the hair back over the teased hair to create a smooth appearance. Tuck ends of hair under to leave a clean and polished look. Secure ends in place with hairpins, but do it in a way where the pins don't show. Form curls with the loose hair in the back, or comb hanging hair so it looks neat. Spray hair with hairspray.

  2. Step 2

The Plain Beehive. Part hair from side-to-side, a distance away from of the front of the head, and clip section of hair in place. Comb remaining hair up and secure on top of head with elastic band. Tease hair as instructed in Step 1 until all the hair in the ponytail is teased. Remove clip and comb front section of hair back and over teased hair. Tuck ends under and secure with hairpins, or form ends of loose hair into a curl and secure in place in center back of head. Spray hair with hairspray.

  3. Step 3

The French Twist Beehive. Part hair from side-to-side, a distance away from the front of the head and clip section of hair in place. Comb remaining hair up and twist to make a roll of hair against the back of the head. Push hairpins into sides of roll to hold in place. Tease ends of loose hair from roll to create a mass of teased hair on top of head. Take clip out of hair and comb hair over teased hair. Make a curl with ends of hair and secure in place at back of head, at the top of the roll of hair. Spray hair with hairspray.

  4. Step 4

The Banged Beehive. Part hair from side-to-side, a distance away from the front of the head, and let this section of hair serve as your bangs (cut hair to make bangs if desired). A few inches back from that part, make another side-to-side part, and clip this section of hair to keep it temporarily out of the way. Comb the remaining hair up and secure with an elastic band on top of the head. Tease hair in ponytail, and then comb clipped hair over teased hair. Make a curl with the ends of the hair and secure with hairpins, or tuck ends of hair under neatly and secure with hairpins. Spray hair with hairspray.

  5. Step 5

The Ponytail Beehive. Make a side-to-side part, a distance away from the front of the head and secure with a hair clip to keep the hair temporarily out of the way. Make another side-to-side part at the top back area of the head, and clip that section of hair with a hair clip. Make a ponytail at the back of the head with the remaining hair and secure with an elastic band. Remove clip and tease middle section of hair, and then remove other clip and comb first section of hair over the teased hair and tuck ends of hair neatly under and secure with hairpins. Spray beehive section of hair with hairspray.

Tips & Warnings
  • With the ponytail beehive, you may want to wrap a piece of hair around the elastic band to conceal it, or you can put a jeweled hairpin or hair clip at the top of the ponytail for a glamorous look. You can use decorative hair clips to dress up any one of the beehive hairstyles.
  • Teasing can damage hair.
