How to Place a Bedpan
Bedpans are used for patients who are paralyzed or recovering from surgery, or for anyone who has problems with mobility. A patient may feel embarrassed if she has to use the bedpan, because relieving oneself is such a personal matter. Here are some tips that will help you maintain the patient's dignity.

1
Place items such as toilet paper, washcloth, towel, disposable gloves and a basin of warm water near the patient so you can easily reach them.
-
2
Warm a metal bedpan by running warm water over it, then dry it. A warm bedpan will make it easier for the patient to relieve himself. Make sure the bedpan isn't too hot before use.

3
Sprinkle baby powder on the edge of the bedpan's surface so that it will easily slide under the patient. Put on the disposable gloves.
-
4
Roll the patient away from you on his side. Place a waterproof absorbent pad underneath the patient's buttocks to prevent any spills on the bed.
-
5
Slide the bedpan against the patient's buttocks with your hand. Hold the bedpan in place. Slowly roll the patient onto her back and up onto the bedpan.
-
6
Raise the head of the bed slightly if possible. The patient may find it easier to have a bowel movement or urinate in the sitting position.
-
7
Allow the patient some privacy unless she is too weak.
-
8
Lower the head of the bed when the patient has finished relieving herself. Roll the patient gently on her side so that you can carefully slide out the bedpan. Lay a towel over the bedpan and place it on a chair. Never place it on the bed table or bedside stand.
-
9
Clean the patient's buttocks with toilet paper. Use a wet washcloth and soap and water to cleanse the area if necessary. Dry the space between the patient's legs.
-
10
Give the patient a damp washcloth so she can clean her hands when she is done.
