Overcome an Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is characterized by fear, worry, or panic and is normally the body's natural alarm response. For some people anxiety can become constant or severe even when there is no danger, developing into an anxiety disorder. There are many types of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and phobias. Prescription medication and therapy are often used in overcoming an anxiety disorder, but there are lifestyle changes you can make to help as well.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga or deep breathing on a regular basis and during particularly stressful times. Relaxation techniques can help to deflate anxiety and stress as well as prevent future attacks.

  2. Step 2

Take medication as prescribed by a doctor or psychiatrist. Medication is a great tool in helping to control your anxiety while you learn new techniques to deal with stress and anxiety.

  3. Step 3

Allow yourself 30 minutes a day of "worry time" then move on with your day. Keep an index card with you to jot down worry thoughts as they come to you. Focus on things that are actually happening and avoid worrying about things that might happen.

  4. Step 4

Exercise for 30 minutes a day, at least five days a week. Exercise provides a healthy coping strategy, distraction from dwelling on anxiety and allows you to feel the accomplishment of meeting goals. Going to a gym provides a social environment that helps prevent isolation.

  5. Step 5

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and drug abuse. Caffeine activates the central nervous system, which can worsen anxiety. Alcohol and drugs may seem relaxing, but actually worsen anxiety and cause more problems in the long run.
