    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Betty Crocker prepackaged sugar-cookie mix Butter 1 egg Flour Large bowl Long-handled mixing spoon Rolling pin Graduation-hat cookie cutter Cookie sheet 12 oz. container of vanilla icing 2 small bowls Spoon Food coloring Butter knife Piping bag
      • 1

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

      • 2

Empty the prepackaged cookie mix into a large bowl and add 1/3 cup butter, egg and 2 tablespoons of flour. Mix well and form into a ball.

      • 3

Sprinkle flour onto a work surface and place the ball of dough in the center.

      • 4

Flour a rolling pin and roll the dough to 1/4 inch thick.

      • 5

Press the graduation-cap cookie cutter into the dough, applying even pressure.

      • 6

Place the cut-out dough onto a cookie sheet and bake for 8 minutes, or until the cookies are golden brown. Allow the cookies to cool and remove from the cookie sheet.

      • 7

Put 3/4 of the vanilla icing into a small bowl and add a few drops of food coloring to match the school colors of your graduating student.

      • 8

Put the other 1/4 container of vanilla icing into the other bowl. Add a few drops of food coloring to match the school colors of your graduating student. This is for the piping. (You need to do this step only if your school has two school colors.)

      • 9

Use a butter knife to spread icing over the top of the cookies. Use only one color.

      • 10

Put the second colored icing into a piping bag. Pipe around the outline of the hat, and fill in the tassel. If you do not have a piping bag, simply put the icing into a sandwich bag and push the contents into one corner. Snip the end of your sandwich bag off with a pair of scissors. Squeeze gently to make the piping.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can use any brand of prepackaged sugar-cookie mix; check read the instructions for oven temperature, cooking times and additional ingredients. Apply even pressure to the handles of your rolling pin to keep your dough at an even thickness. Wiggle the cookie cutter when you press it into the dough. This will help release the cutout. Let your cookies have cooled completely before icing them.

    • If you need black food coloring, don't just mix all the colors together; you'll just get a dirty-looking brown. You can purchase black food coloring at grocery and hobby stores.
