  1. Keep It Up

    • 1

Choose the appropriate level of holding strength. Hairsprays come in strengths varying from light hold to maximum hold. It's important to choose one that works well with the hairstyle you'll be creating. Light holds are good for free-flowing hair while maximum holds are good for updos that should stay in place with little movement.

    • 2

Apply hairspray at the correct time. It's best to always apply hairspray to your overall hairstyle after it is finished. In addition, you may also apply hairspray in between styling steps if you are having a hard time containing the style.

    • 3

Shake the hairspray. You need to unsettle the hairspray's contents after it's been sitting to reactivate its holding power. Shake the container well while the lid is still on.

    • 4

Position the hairspray nozzle. The nozzle should be placed approximately six inches away from your hair to avoid overconcentration in one area.

    • 5

Apply hairspray. If you are using an aerosol hairspray it is important to move quickly. Press down on the nozzle spray while moving back and forth, never standing in one place. Apply a quick and even layer of hairspray in one consistent spray over your entire head. If you are working with non-aerosol hairspray, apply quick bursts letting go of the pressure on the nozzle almost instantly. Move along to the next area of your hair with consistent quick bursts.
