Recover Rar Files

A file that has the "RAR" extension is an archive that contains several compressed files. If you have lost the file, it is still possible to retrieve it. Even if you have already emptied the "Recycle Bin," the data for the file are still hidden on your computer's hard drive. To recover the deleted RAR file, you will need to use a file-recovery program that searches your hard drive for the lost data, then recreates the original file.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install the "Recover My Files" program, which is a file-recovery utility capable of recovering deleted RAR files.

    • 2
      The "Complete File Search" Button

Open the file recovery utility, then exit out of the "Tips" menu that will pop up. Click the "Complete File Search" button at the middle of the window.

    • 3
      The "Manually Set Options" Button

Click the "Manually Set Options" button at the lower-right corner of the screen. Check the boxes at the top of the window labeled as "Search for Lost Files" and "Search for Deleted Files."

    • 4

Navigate to the "Advanced" tab in the "Manual Options" window. Check the boxes labeled "Search Physical Drives" and "Search in Active File Areas." Click the "Apply" button, then click "Next."

    • 5

Scroll through the list of drives and devices that are connected to your computer. Locate the drive where your deleted RAR file was originally located. Click on the box next to the drive's name.

    • 6
      The "Archives" Heading

Select the "Next" option at the bottom of the window. Scroll down through the list of the different types of files the utility can recover. Find the "Archive" heading, then click on the "RAR" button.

    • 7

Click on "Next," then click "Start." Wait for the utility to finish recovering all of the deleted RAR files on that drive. Click the "Save" button at the top end of the window.

    • 8

Find the folder on your computer's hard drive where you want the recovered RAR file to be saved. Click on the folder's name, then click "OK" to recover your RAR file.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will have a much better chance of recovering your lost RAR file if you use your computer as little as possible as soon as you notice the file is gone. Anytime you modify, delete or create a new file, the system writes over random sectors on the hard drive's platters. If the sector that contains your deleted RAR file is written over, the file might be lost for good.
