How to Train to Be an Accountant

While some accountants are self-employed, many work for larger accounting firms or in accounting departments at small or large businesses and corporations. The specific educational requirements vary based on the needs and expectations of the firms or businesses hiring and it is always important to check with each prospective employer if you are interested in applying. It is essential to build a strong educational background, as much previous work experience as possible, and pass all statewide certification and licensure exams before applying for a position as an accountant.

Obtain an undergraduate education. Most employers require, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in accounting. Some employers will hire a candidate with less education if they have prior accounting experience. However, given the certification requirements, nearly all accountants need a formal education to become licensed and eligible to work.

If necessary, obtain a graduate education. Many companies, particularly federal agencies prefer their employees to have master's degrees. Candidates who have earned bachelor's degrees in accounting or other business related fields often move on to obtain graduate degrees in accounting. Having an accounting degree often increases your chances of getting a job, being promoted, and receiving a higher salary.

    • 3

Take the certification exam. In order to become a certified public accountant (CPA), candidates must pass the four-part Uniform CPA exam. Approximately half of the candidates taking the four-part Uniform CPA exam fail after the first try. Candidates are not required to pass all four parts at once, but will only gain certification after passing all four sections.

    • 4

If at all possible, gain previous work experience. Even with education and certification, many employers prefer accountants with previous experience. Working in an accounting firm throughout college, even handling administrative tasks, can help impress prospective employers. Internships throughout college also can lead to job offers after graduation. Understand that all related work experience and internships are essential to your training as an accountant.

Accept on-the-job training. Many times, newly hired accountants work alongside a more seasoned professional until they are able to take on more independent responsibility. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn as much as possible. Employers will be impressed by your willingness to learn, which could lead to pay raises and advancements.
