How to Find Percent Error

Percent error is a way to show deviation between a predicted or initial value and an actual or second value. This technique is especially useful for comparing two different deviations whose initial values aren't comparable. To calculate percent error, you need a basic knowledge of what percentage is as well as arithmetic skills.

Instructions

  1. Finding Percent Error

    • 1

Write down the initial or estimated value.

    • 2

Subtract the second, or actual, value from the initial value. Label this the difference.

    • 3

Divide the difference by the actual value and write it down.

    • 4

Multiply the value written down in step 3 by 100; this is your percent error.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure not to reverse the initial (or estimated) value with the second (or actual) value.
