You can easily waterproof jackets or any other apparel in the comfort of your own home by using a silicone spray sealant. Silicone waterproofing will not damage your clothes and can last for several months if properly maintained. It also is an inexpensive alternative to purchasing a new water-resistant jacket.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Silicone spray waterproof sealant Well-ventilated space
  1. Step 1

Buy a silicone spray waterproof sealant.

  2. Step 2

Choose a clean, dry jacket to cover in silicone. Don't apply silicone spray waterproof sealant to expensive or fragile material.

  3. Step 3

Waterproof outside, if possible, or in a well-ventilated area of your home. Fumes from the spray can be harmful in large quantities.

  4. Step 4

Remove any excess dirt or foreign particles from your jacket with a clean cloth. Anything left on your jacket before waterproofing will be stuck there.

  5. Step 5

Hold the spray can 6 to 8 inches from the jacket and cover it with an even coat.

  6. Step 6

Allow your jacket to dry completely before wearing it.

  7. Step 7

Spray additional coats of silicone waterproof spray sealant as needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Retouch your jacket with silicone waterproof spray sealant whenever necessary. Make sure you spray the entire surface of your jacket. Any portion not adequately waterproofed will allow water damage.
