Hardwood and terrazzo tile floors are just a couple of the many different types of flooring available. Terrazzo tile floors are beautiful and their beauty will last for decades if they are properly cared for. They're made of marble or other stone chips mixed with and poured out like concrete. Then they are polished to a gleaming shine. Keep them looking shiny by sweeping regularly and using either a pH neutral cleaner or one specially made for terrazzo floors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Broom Dust mop Neutral cleaner or terrazzo floor cleaner Bucket Electric floor polisher (optional) Electric floor scrubbing machine
  1. Step 1

Sweep and dust mop often to remove sand, dirt and grit, because they act like sandpaper and can scratch the surface of your terrazzo tile floor.

  2. Step 2

Damp mop. To damp mop use a neutral cleaner--one that is neither acid nor alkaline. Use a ½ cup cleaner to 1 ½ gallons of water. Use the mop to saturate the floor with the solution. Allow the cleaning solution to sit on the floor for a few minutes. It is important that you do not let the solution dry on the floor or the dirt will be absorbed back into the terrazzo tile. Add more washing solution if it appears to be evaporating before you can mop it up with clean water.

  3. Step 3

Use a well-wrung-out mop to mop up the solution, then rinse the tiles with clean water.

  4. Step 4

Buff floor when dry with an electric polishing machine to help restore the natural shine of terrazzo.

  5. Step 5

Use an electric floor scrubbing machine several times a year. Depending on how much traffic your terrazzo tile floor gets, clean it with an electric floor scrubbing machine. Prepare a stronger solution to use with the machine, such as 2 cups neutral cleaner to 1 ½ gallons of water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Electric polishing machines and electric floor scrubbing machines are available to rent at rental centers.
  • Do not use all-purpose household cleaners, soaps, detergents or wax removers on your floor, because their chemical composition can harm the surface of your terrazzo floor. Do not use any form of oily sweeping compound or an oiled mop. Oil can permanently discolor the surface of terrazzo floors.
