How to Play an MP3 in Ubuntu

MP3 is the most famous and widely supported digital audio format, and it is playable on essentially all digital audio software and personal digital audio players--which, in fact, are commonly referred to as "MP3 players." Ubuntu, like all major operating systems, natively supports MP3 files. Using software included with Ubuntu, you can easily listen to your MP3s.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Places" in the Gnome panel, which, by default, is located at the top of your screen. In the menu that drops down, select the drive where your MP3 files are located. Nautilus (Ubuntu's file browser) will open. Navigate to the folder where the MP3s you'd like to play are located.

    • 2

Double-click your MP3 file. Totem, a media player included with Ubuntu, will play your file. You can toggle between pausing and playing the file using the icon near the lower-left corner of the window. You can adjust the volume by clicking the speaker icon near the lower-right corner of the window, as well as by adjusting your system's master volume, located near the time on the Gnome panel.

Drag other files into the Playlist pane on the right of the Totem window to queue multiple files for playback. This enables you to organize a single session's worth of music, but if you'd rather organize your MP3s more comprehensively--for instance, by creating multiple elaborate playlists or by altering your files' ID3 tags--use Rhythmbox Music Player instead of Totem.

    • 4

Open Rhythmbox by clicking "Applications" > "Sound & Video" > "Rhythmbox Music Player." Click "Music" > "Import Folder," select the main folder in which you keep your MP3s, then click "Open." Rhythmbox will import all of your MP3s, as well as any other playable music files you have, into its library.

    • 5

Browse your library and double-click any song you want to play. Use the various playback icons near the top of the window to pause/play a song or skip between tracks. Right-click a song and click "Properties" to alter a song's ID3 tags. Click "Music" > "Playlist" > "New Playlist" to create a playlist. Browse through various artists and albums or search based on artist, album or title in the area just above the library.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rhythmbox is a multifeatured program similar to Apple's iTunes that provides all of the above features and more, and fulfills advanced MP3 playback tasks not offered by Totem.
