The Java SDK (Software Development Kit) is a set of tools provided by Sun (the company behind Java) to facilitate the development of Java applications. The SDK assists those wishing to program in the Java language or test Java software. Ubuntu (or other Debian-based Linux) users can easily install the development kit by using their distribution's built-in Synaptic Package Manager.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click "System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager." Once the program loads, type "sun" into the Quick Search box. In the list of search hits, locate "sun-java6-jdk," which is the Java Development Kit. (Click the "Package" header to sort the list alphabetically if you find it hard to comb through.) The number in the file name is a version number; you can ignore it if a later version is available or you'd rather install a previous version.

  2. Step 2

Click the empty checkbox next to sun-java6-jdk. A menu will drop down; click "Mark for Installation." If Synaptic Package Manager asks you to mark other software for installation or otherwise take action to properly install the development kit, follow the prompts to do so.

  3. Step 3

Click "Apply," to the left of the Quick Search box. The software will ask you if you want to apply the displayed changes. Click the "Apply" button in the lower right-hand corner of the window.

Synaptic Package Manager will download the necessary software, then begin installing it. The installation progress will be displayed in the "Applying Changes" dialog box.

Shortly into the installation process, you will be asked to agree to Sun's license terms.

  4. Step 4

Read the license agreement and choose whether or not to agree to the terms. If you do, click the empty check box indicating your assent, then click "Forward."

  5. Step 5

Wait for Synaptic Package Manager to complete the installation process, whereupon it will announce its successful installation.
