How to Make a Choker Necklace

Ribbons are one of the easiest items to use to make a choker necklace. Available in a multitude of colors and designs, you can create a necklace that is the height of sophistication or one that is fun and flirty. A large charm or button will give the choker a finished look and draw attention to the graceful lines of the neck. You can find the supplies to make your own choker at most craft and bead shops.

    • Fabric ribbon Scissors Ribbon crimp ends Flat nose pliers Clasp Charm or button Needle and thread
      • 1

Cut a 16-inch length of 1/2-inch wide fabric ribbon. Wrap it around your neck to check the size and shorten if it is too long. Keep in mind the clasp will add approximately 1 inch to the total length.

      • 2

Slide one end of the ribbon into a ribbon crimp end. Crimp it closed by pressing it with your flat nose pliers.

      • 3

Pull open the jump ring on the crimp ends and attach a necklace clasp. You can use any style of clasp desired.

      • 4

Slide a charm onto the ribbon and center it. Sew a few stitches around the charms bail to secure it to the ribbon and keep it from sliding around. Alternatively, sew a pretty button onto the ribbon.

      • 5

Slide the other end of the ribbon into a crimp end and press closed. Attach the other side of the clasp to this end. Your necklace is ready to wear.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Sew buttons all around the choker for an interesting look. Attach a short length of chain to one end of the ribbon end so you can adjust the length of the necklace.
