How to Use Provigil
Provigil is an oral prescription medication that helps a person stay awake. FDA approved uses for Provigil are for the treatment of narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea and shift work sleep disorder. The active ingredient in Provigil is modafinil. The exact way that Provigil works to promote wakefulness is not understood. It is known that Provigil affects the brain's dopamine system.

Take your prescribed dose of Provigil with an 8 oz. glass of water when you wake up in the morning if you are taking the medication for narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH).

Take your prescribed dose of Provigil one hour before work with an 8 oz. glass of water if you are taking the medication for shift work sleep disorder (SWSD). If you want to eat food with the Provigil, take the medication two hours before your job starts.

Take a missed dose of Provigil as soon as you remember to, unless it is close to your bedtime. If it close to your bedtime, skip the dose.

Tips & Warnings
The most common side effects associated with Provigil are anxiety, back pain, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dizziness and a stuffy nose. Provigil is approved for use in people 16 years old and older.
Do not take Provigil if you are allergic to modafinil. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition, liver condition or are addicted to drugs before taking Provigil. Discontinue the use of Provigil and call 911 if you experience chest pain, a serious rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing or serious psychiatric symptoms. The safety of Provigil in pregnant and nursing women is unknown. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, become pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are a nursing mother. Do not drink alcohol while taking Provigil. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how Provigil will affect you.
