Step 1
Start with books you already know something about.
If you're a model train enthusiast, specialize in model train books. If you're a chess fanatic, start with that type of book. If you love reading novels, selling fiction might be a great niche for you. -
Step 2
Begin researching what books sell best in your niche.
One of the best ways to do this is search on books you already have in your own collection - you can do searches on Google, Amazon, eBay, etc. and start compiling a list of what books are listed there, and their asking prices.
As you do this kind of research, you will start to get a real feel for what topics, publishers, specialties, authors, etc. are going to be on your "bestseller" list. -
Step 3
Sell some of your own books first.
One of the best ways to start selling is by selling off your own books that you no longer want. This lets you ease into bookselling without making much of an upfront investment in cash.
Do some research as outlined in Step Two, price your books, select a site to list them on, and cross your fingers. -
Step 4
Start to buy books for resale.
After you sell your first few books, you can start to seek out books to buy. Garage sales, flea markets, and community rummage sales are all great sources. -
Step 5
Be fair and honest.
As with any business, customer service is your key to success. Always describe your books' flaws, always ship promptly and carefully, and always respond quickly and professionally to communication from your buyers.
