Things You'll Need:
- Rod & Reel, 1/0 to 2/0 hooks, surf leaders, 1 to 2 ounce weights, bait
-
Step 1
Gather all of the equipment needed for a fun and safe fishing trip. Drive out to your nearest spot on the Delta, you'll be able to find catfish in any of these waterways. If you want a particularly good place to fish ask around at you local bait shops. Make sure you pick up some bait and that you have all the suggested tackle. For bait you should try chicken livers, clams, anchovies, or mackerel. Worms can work good sometimes too.
-
Step 2
Here is a surf leader rig set up.Set up on the side of the bank. Take out your rod/reel combo. Spool the line through the eyes of the rod. Tie a surf leader onto the line with the clip side hanging down off the bottom. Attach a 1 to 2 ounce weight to the clip on the bottom of the leader.
-
Step 3
There will be two loops in the middle area of the surf leader set up. Take the loops on the hooks that you have and run them through the surf leader loops. Then place the hook through the loop of the line attached to the hook. Pull tight until it forms a not with the surf leader loop. Do the same for both loops.
-
Step 4
Next you want to bait up both of the hooks. The preferred bait for bigger catfish would be chicken liver. Take a sizeable piece of liver and run the hook through it twice. If you have some sewing thread or elastic string you can use that to tie it on so it doesn't come off so easily.
-
Step 5
Cast out your bait and let it sink to the bottom. After it sinks fully tighten up the line so that you can see some tension and either hold on to it or leave it in a rod holder. Wait patiently and when you get a bite remember to set the hook. Have fun!
