A hammock is very relaxing.

Swinging in a cool hammock in the shade of a big tree alongside the one I love is one of the best things about spring and summer. You can enjoy a rest in a hammock without damaging trees if you take a bit of care in choosing the trees and installing the hooks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Choose a spot
The trick is to find two sturdy trees spaced just right. The distance between the two trees should be a foot longer than the length of your hammock. This way your hammock will be taught enough to hold you off the ground. Choose trees that are hardwoods with a trunk circumference of about 40 inches or more and look to be healthy and sturdy.

  2. Step 2

    Hook it
At a height of about 5 to 6 feet from the ground, install eye bolts. Make sure the bolts have a diameter of at least 3/8” and go into the tree bark at least two inches deep. This height should be enough to make sure the hammock with your weight (and maybe a loved ones’ weight too) doesn’t drag along the ground, but gives a relaxing sway. The size and depth of the eyebolts ensures that you won’t fall and that the tree won’t be damaged.

  3. Step 3

    Look up
Before you hang the hammock and get comfy, look up and around for any dead branches that may fall on you.
