1
Keep a notebook with you at all times. Purchase a small notebook or journal and every time you hear a word that interests you, that you are not familiar with, write it down. When you have some time, look the word up and write down the definition next to the word.
-
2
Look up synonyms to words that you already know. Synonyms are words that have the same or almost the same meaning as other words in the English language. Write these new words down in your journal with the definitions or with the synonyms.

Visit dictionary.com. This website offers a word of the day on its homepage. Most of the words they choose are common words that can be used in everyday conversations. Check the site each day. If there is a word that you like or you think you would use, write it in your notebook along with its definition.

4
Read books. One great source used to enhance vocabularies is reading. If a person is repeatedly exposed to new words, the more likely the person is to remember the words and to begin using them. When you're reading, if you see a word that you like or are unsure of what it means, look up the meaning and record it in your journal. When you choose books to read, pick a variety that will hold your interest.

5
Make guesses about word meanings. When you encounter a new word using any of these methods, make an educated guess about its meaning. After you do this, look the word up to see how acurate you were.
-
6
Review your list often. Each day when you are writing words in your notebook, take a few minutes to review some of the words listed. Try putting a word or two into a sentence. This will give you practice utilizing the new words you've learned.
