Ace an Interview - Get Your Dream Job

You've got a great resume and you've finally landed a dream interview...now what. Too many people let their nerves get the best of them, or they don't spend enough time preparing for the big day...read on to learn how you can guarantee success and land your dream job!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First of all, let's address your ensemble for Interview Day...No matter what position you're applying for, you should dress professionally and look both neat and clean. Whether you're applying to become an executive or dig ditches, you should "dress up" for your interview...If possible, purchase something new. A professional button down shirt and a fitted jacket (with a skirt or dress slacks for women and slacks or pressed khakis for men)will work for both sexes. (Men, if you're applying for an executive job, please wear a tie). Try to avoid 'white' - instead, choose a color that brightens your complexion....

Wear simple jewelry and try to cover any tattoos (unless of course you're applying for a tatoo job). Keep hair neat and out of your face. Low key makeup and little or no purfume or cologne. And, make sure your nails are manicured, neat and clean...trust me, the hiring manager WILL notice. (By all means, wear deodorant...Lord knows you might experience a little nervous sweating) :)

  2. Step 2

Consider contacting a career counselor and paying for a short training session...many professional resume firms offer this service via the internet or phone. They put together common questions that might be asked in your chosen career field and do mock interviews, or simply give you coaching session to build your confidence. You need to prepare for the actual interviews...just looking good won't be enough...you will have to be "on", but don't overdo it. A career counselor is helpful for people who haven't a clue as how to start or experience above average nervousness.

  3. Step 3

Carry a list of references, an extra copy of your resume and cover letter, a card (if you have one), and a list of questions to ask your interviewer. Having questions typed or written out neatly will show that you've been anticipating this SPECIFIC interview. Carry these items in a neat folder or attache case.

  4. Step 4

And some final quick tips - Arrive 15 minutes early, DON'T chew gum...pop a mint if you need to...but DON'T go chompin' on some gum in there...hiring managers HATE THAT...even if they're chewing gum themselves. If you're nervous, be honest about it...simply say "I'm so excited about this opportunity that I've made myself a little nervous about this interview"...that will usually cause a hiring manager to become a little more laid back, thereby allowing you to relax a little too! Shake hands firmly (but not crushingly) and keep eye contact when you meet your potential employer. Eat a banana just before heading to the interview...they contain natural beta blockers and can help calm your nerves.

If you're spiritual - say a few prayers!

    GOOD LUCK!
