Although your chances of actually getting struck by lightning are pretty low. Around 68 people in the United States die every year from lightning strikes. So even though the chances are slim that you will be struck by lightning you should always be safe and take precautions. This article outlines several ways on how to stay safe from lightning.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

During a thunderstorm always try and seek shelter indoors in a safe building.Safe buildings are buildings that have four walls,a floor, plumbing and wiring. It's very important that they have plumbing and wiring because a lightning strike will travel through the wiring into the ground.

  2. Step 2

When outside be sure to stay away from metal and other items that are likely to be struck by lightning. This also means to stay away from trees and other partially open shelters such as a picnic shelter or gazebo if they are free from internal wiring. It's also best to remove all metal objects from your person.

  3. Step 3

If you can't reach a safe shelter while outdoors,it's best to find a ditch or low lying area and wait out the storm in a crouched position. You will want to avoid large open areas where you will be the tallest thing in sight.

  4. Step 4

When riding out a thunder storm while safely indoors there are still a few safety precautions that you should consider. Such as staying away from water, this means don't take a shower or wash dishes. Stay off the telephone and don't use computers or play video games all of these items can conduct electricity which means that they are not safe during an electrical storm.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the storm is over.
  • Lightning has been known to strike 25 miles away from a storm.
  • Lightning can strike twice, so don't believe that old wives tale.
  • Stay away from water, being on or in water is probably the worst place that you can be.
